Movie Night at 6pm!
It's Christmas time, and we know that people have a lot of extra stress. So that's why we're taking a break from our usual intellectually-based proceedings, and showing a total goof-off movie. "UHF" may not be a masterpiece, (some may even say it's pretty lousy) (but don't listen to them!) but it is a perpetual favorite among fans of wacky comedy, and on this night, wacky comedy is what really matters! Watch as George Newman ("Weird Al" Yankovic) attempts to revitalize the world's most obscure television station with his own unique brand of off-beat original programming. Wheel of Fish! Conan the Librarian! And of course, the unforgettable Stanley Spadowski's Funhouse (with Michael Richards or "Seinfeld" fame). But all will be for naught if the film's villain, the archetypical rich white corporate guy in a suit (Kevin McCarthy) wins out, and shuts down the dump! Sure, it's an overly familiar underdog plot, but that's just a means to showcase Weird Al's obvious mental backlog of good-natured pop-culture skewering.
But wait, congregation - there's MORE! In what I'm pretty sure is a first for this church, if not the entire PCA, we are declaring this the First Ever Grace& Peace "Weird Al" Yankovic Appreciation Night! I have personally prepared a pre-show reel featuring a hodge-podge of all things Al! Music videos, concert footage, animation, and some clips involving 1950s stock footage that have to be seen to be comprehended. (And even then...) Why all of this attention for the guy who built a career changing the words of other people's songs? For one, consider this: In the early 1980s, when Al's "Eat It" scored big, who would've guessed that all these years later, Al would still be relevant, but Michael Jackson wouldn't be?? (Yeah, that's a two-question mark query!) Ponder THAT over your next can of aerosol
cheese!
Please join us for this night of unapologetic stupidity Sunday night in the Blue Room, at 6 PM! (Hey, what do you want for free?) Bring snacks and drinks, and come ready for free popcorn, and lots of laughs. You know you could use it. Who knows, we may even be moved to discuss the place of this type of humor in the zany scope of our lives. So don't change the channel, don't touch that dial - we've got it all on "UHF"!
"UHF" (1989)
Directed by Jay Levey.
Starring ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic, Victoria
Jackson, and Kevin McCarthy.
Rated PG-13, 97 minutes, color.
Christmas is a-coming. The goose is getting fat . . .
It surprises me how often my childhood Christmas songs come back. At 13 years old I broke out of the house and joined a Cleveland metropolitan children's choir called Singing Angels, and those songs are a part of me. We had exhausting Christmas concert schedules. My poor chauffeur mom. I also have vivid memories of coming downstairs on Christmas morning from a room I shared with my 3 sisters, and seeing a spectacular white tablecloth with huge red poinsettias, and a black iron sled with a candle to be lit when the meal began.Do you have room at your Christmas table for more? No tablecloth required. Do you not really have plans for a Christmas meal, but would like to be included in another church household's plans? Sign up with your name and phone number along with number of people you are talking about. If you don't have a phone, please be sure to write down how we can contact you. Or, better yet, phone me. From Global Outreach
Wouldn't it be good to give or have gifts given in your name? Have you ever thought of giving to Christian organizations at Christmas in a friend or family member's name as a gift? So many of us have more than we need or even can use, this is a way to further God's kingdom. Some suggestions:
- The missionaries we support. Gifts could be designated for Mission to the World, the Haiti disaster response or for Baldaeus Theological College in Sri Lanka. Money could be sent to GoNigeria, 10559 Countess Dr., Dallas, TX 75229, to help feed orphans and people affected by ethnic violence in Jos, Nigeria.
- Funds to help rebuilding in the Democratic Republic of Congo could be sent to Bundibugyo, Uganda where Heidi is working, there is the Bundi Nutrition Fund which provides long term nutrition for local children and orphans: World Harvest Mission, Bundi Nutrition Fund, 101 West Ave. Suite 305, Jenkintown, PA 19046 Samaritan's Purse and World Vision provide water purification kits, bicycles for evangelists. Baby chicks, a goat or a cow for a family.

Celebrate Recovery Corner
Introductory informational meetings: Sunday 12/14 6:00 to 7:30 pm in the Church LibraryCelebrate Recovery is a safe place to pursue increasing acknowledgement of our need to do business with God. We learn to be open to what God has to show us about Himself, what He has to show us about ourselves, and then what he has to show us about our relationships with others. We trust God to change us and for change in others, according to His will. We learn how to share with others what God is teaching us. Our sharing is structured in a way to keep it safe.
The small group guidelines provide this structure and are read prior to each small group session. Participants are encouraged to focus on themselves and their own experience, not their family member, friend or others in the group. The guideline against ‘cross talk’ allows the speaker to share without interruption. We come to CR to support one another, NOT to fix one another (that’s God’s job), this limits advice-giving and preaching. A limit of 3-5 minutes prevents any one person from monopolizing the time. Confidentiality and anonymity are basic requirements: what is shared in the group stays in the group. The only exception is when someone threatens to injure themselves or others. Offensive language has no place in a Christ-centered recovery group. This includes avoiding graphic descriptions out of respect for others’ boundaries and to minimize triggers that may cause added difficulty to someone in the group.
Step 11. We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.”
